Below is the audio recorder I use to mic up the Groom and Officiant for the Ceremony. This is also the audio recorder I use for any first looks throughout the day.
The Tascam provides for crisp audio, has auto levels so you don't have to worry about peaking, and has a locking mechanism on the lav mic so that you don't need to worry about your lav disconnecting from the recorder. This is a two pack, which I recommend so that you have 1 for the Groom and 1 for the Officiant. It comes with memory cards as well as the lav mics.
They take a single AAA battery. I have linked the batteries I use below. They are rechargeable so you don't waste money on new batteries every wedding and I have never had them drop below 50% battery during a Wedding Day.
Below is all of the equipment I use to connect to the DJ's Soundboard for the Ceremony + Reception. The Zoom F3 is a handy audio recorder that records audio in 32 bit float. 32 bit float allows you to recover audio that is significantly peaked or far too low. This provides piece of mind on a Wedding Day. I set the audio to record, and as long as I see some sort of wave-length, I know that I will have great audio.
I have included all of the cables that I carry with me on a Wedding Day. I have not found a DJ set-up yet that I was unable to connect to with one of the cables below. This will leave you prepared and make you look like a pro when you ask the DJ if you can connect to their set-up.
The Zoom F3 takes 2 AA batteries. Below are the rechargeable batteries that I use. I have never had my recorder drop below 50% on a Wedding Day using the batteries below.
This setup is a game-changer for Wedding Videography. At the start of my career, I would shuffle around trying to put a lav mic on anyone giving speeches during the Reception. This was challenging as the Speeches were typically back-to-back not allowing for time to move a lav mic from one speaker to another and there would often be a Maid of Honor or other female in a dress who I was unable to put a lav mic on.
With this set-up, you will never again have to struggle with mic'ing up a speaker giving a toast during a Wedding Reception. You will take the black 'Mic Sleeve' below, put it around the microphone that the speakers will be using, and then slide the Sony Audio Recorder into the mic sleeve. This puts a Recorder directly on the mic the speaker is talking into and provides for beautiful audio giving some room tone as well. I use this line of audio over the line from the DJ's Soundboard 90% of the time.
For those worried of DJ's not allowing them to use this strategy, out of the 50+ Weddings I have shot in my career, I have only had 1 DJ that was not okay with me doing this. Go up to the DJ with confidence prior to the Reception and ask, "Can I put an internal recorder on the microphone?" Most of them will readily hand over the mic and those that don't, reassure them that it will not create any issues with their microphone.
I highly recommend purchasing the bag below. I put all of the above items in this bag (they fit very nicely). This allows me to keep everything organized and in one place. This is invaluable when you're quickly trying to find cables and recorders throughout the day.
